FAQ

Do caravan electrical installations need to comply with Australian standards?

Yes caravan wiring must meet AS/NZS 3001 standards, and RCDs (safety switches) are required for mains power connections.

Who is allowed to perform electrical work on a caravan?

Only a licensed electrician can carry out electrical installations and issue mandatory compliance certificates.

What are the rules for extension leads at caravan parks?

Extension leads must be single continuous length, rated 15 A, fully uncoiled, and securely tied off—double adaptors or powerboards are not allowed.

Are caravans required to have smoke or safety alarms?

Yes smoke alarms must be installed, and it is highly recommended to also include carbon monoxide detectors for added safety.

Are upgrades like lithium batteries and solar setups allowed in caravans?

Yes AGM and lithium systems are permitted, but upgrades or new work involving 240 V must comply with the latest AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 and be installed by a licensed electrician.
